Frieze New York's latest edition strengthens its ties to the city's vibrant art scene. Held at The Shed, the fair boasts a strong presence from New York galleries and artists, alongside a robust international outlook.

Local Focus

This year's Frieze features over half of its exhibitors hailing from New York. First-time participants include the rising Tribeca gallery Kapp Kapp, showcasing Stanley Stellar's homoerotic photographs of the West Side piers. Notably, Gladstone Gallery returns with a solo presentation by Alex Katz, marking their comeback since relocating to The Shed.

The fair champions local non-profits through partnerships with organizations like Artists Space and Performance Space New York. This commitment extends to showcasing under-recognized artists, like the Paraguayan textile artist Feliciano Centurión presented by Ortuzar Projects.

International Reach

Despite the local emphasis, Frieze maintains its global perspective. South African gallery Stevenson returns after a five-year hiatus, showcasing painters like Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi and sculptors like Bronwyn Katz. This highlights the fair's ability to connect international artists with a discerning New York audience.

Supporting Emerging Galleries

The Focus section, curated by Lumi Tan, aims to make participation more accessible for young galleries. This year, it features 11 exhibitors, including New York's Company Gallery and Gordon Robichaux. Notably, two galleries – Bogotá's Instituto de Visión and Los Angeles' Château Shatto – have graduated from Focus to the main sector, demonstrating the program's effectiveness.

Overall, Frieze New York 2024 reaffirms its commitment to fostering a dynamic dialogue between the local and international art worlds, while fostering a supportive environment for emerging voices.
